Some people who have an illness or a disability may have difficulty making it to the polling station, which is why various cantons have a system of roaming ballot boxes.
The communes of various cantons organise roaming ballot boxes according to a timetable. Ballot boxes may also be placed in hospitals and old people’s homes. In certain cantons, electoral staff collect the sealed envelopes with ballot papers for votes and elections at the homes of people who are elderly, have an illness or a disability.

Some cantons allow voting by proxy (to avoid people with disabilities having to get to the polling station).
Normally, third parties are prohibited from completing ballot papers for another person. Only those who are unable to write may have their ballot papers completed by someone else.
The cantons ensure that citizens with permanent disabilities preventing them from exercising their right to vote are able to vote.
