    Motorway vignette

    Motorway vignette

In Switzerland, you must have a special sticker on your car if you want to use certain roads. It is called a vignette and costs CHF 40. The sticker 2023 is valid from 1 December 2022 to 31 January 2024.

If you are coming to Switzerland from abroad, you can buy the motorway vignette at customs as you enter the country.

If you want to take a car, motorbike, trailer, caravan, delivery van or camper (up to 3.5 tonnes) on Swiss motorways and expressways, you need a motorway vignette sticker.

The vignette must be stuck to the inside of the windscreen and must be clearly visible. In the case of vehicles without windows, such as trailers, the vignette must be affixed to a clearly visible part of the vehicle that cannot be removed.

The vignette is not yet available in electronic form. For the time being, you must therefore buy the sticker and put it on your windscreen.

Please note: Heavy vehicles (of more than 3.5 tonnes) do not need a vignette. They are subject to a special heavy vehicle charge instead.

    • Each Swiss motorway vignette costs CHF 40.

    • The sticker 2023 ist valid from 1 December 2022 to 31 January 2024.

    • There are no daily, weekly or monthly vignettes.

    • The vignette is not yet available in electronic form. It is planned to introduce the e-vignette in the course of 2023. The e-vignette will be available for purchase via a Federal Office for Customs and Border Security webshop.

    • Please note: If you are driving without a vignette, you will be fined (CHF 200) and will also have to buy the vignette itself (CHF 40).

    In Switzerland

In Switzerland you can buy the motorway vignette at filling stations, post offices, and at customs posts at the border. You can also get it online from the Swiss Post website.

    Abroad

You can buy the Swiss motorway vignette before entering Switzerland from selected points of sale or online.

Once your vignette has expired you can remove it from your windscreen. The best way is with a razor blade and a little patience.

If you have stuck a vignette on your vehicle, under no circumstances may you take it off and put it on another one. You cannot do this even if the other vehicle belongs to you or you have interchangeable number plates.

Detailed information on the roads for which you need a vignette can be found on this page: map of motorways and expressways in Switzerland.

If you have any further questions or need more information on the motorway vignette, please consult the page giving the contact details of the authority responsible and FAQs on the vignette.
