Temporarily taking your vehicle off the road

If you know you won’t be using your vehicle for a certain period of time, you can deposit your number plates with your canton’s road traffic office. When you deposit your number plates you don’t have to pay third party insurance or vehicle tax.

Depositing your number plates

  • Hand in your number plates to your canton’s road traffic office (in person or by post).
  • Number plates will only be accepted if they are clean and have been removed from their frames
  • You don’t have to pay third party insurance from the day after you hand in your number plates.
  • Car tax already paid will be refunded.
  • Deposited number plates are kept in reserve for the holder for a certain period of time. This period may vary from canton to canton but is at least one year. After this your number plates will be released for issue to a new holder. Contact your canton’s road traffic office for more information.

Retrieving your number plates

When you want to retrieve the number plates, you have to send the road traffic office a new insurance certificate along with the application. Your insurance company will provide you with the insurance certificate.
