Ordering civil status certificates

Depending on what kind of document you want to order, the civil register office responsible may be different.

The following documents are ordered from the civil register office in your place of origin:

If you are not a Swiss citizen, you can order these documents from the civil register office in your place of domicile or place of residence, or from the civil register office in your last place of domicile.

  • Certificate of origin (for Swiss citizens): this document serves as the basis for entering your personal details in the register of residents in your place of residence.
  • Civil status certificate (for Swiss citizens): this certificate contains the details of your current civil status, such as your name and marital status.
  • Confirmation of registered civil status (for foreign nationals): This confirmation provides the current civil status, such as surname and marital status.
  • Registered civil status document: this certificate provides information on the current civil status of a person, and of a person’s children (from marriage or otherwise).
  • Family record document: this document confirms the place and date of marriage and contains the current personal details of the husband, wife and children from their marriage. It is replaced if a new event affecting civil status (e.g. a birth, death, recognition of a child) occurs.

  • Marriage certificate: this document states the place and date of the civil marriage ceremony, the names of the bride and groom before and after marriage and their places of origin.
  • Partnership certificate: this document confirms the place and date of registration of a same-sex partnership and the names of the partners before and after registration.

Documents ordered from the civil register office at the place of birth:

  • Birth certificate: this document certifies the birth of a child. It provides details of the place, date and time of birth and of the parents (surnames, first names, places of origin and places of residence).

Documents ordered from the civil register office at the place of recognition:

Documents ordered from the civil register office at the place of death:

  • Death certificate: this document certifies the death of a person and provides details of the place, date and time of death.
