    Checklist for moving home

Have you thought of everything? Have you notified your commune of residence of your departure and registered with your new commune? Have you informed the post office of your change of address? Our checklist for moving home will help you remember everything you need to do before and after the move, and on the day of the move itself.

    All themes

    • Sign a new rental agreement (or a sales contract) and cancel the old one in due time, preferably by registered letter.

    • Arrange a day off work with your employer. You are generally entitled to a day off for moving. You may receive more time if you’re moving a long distance.

    • Notify your previous commune of residence in due time of your departure – find out beforehand from the residents’ registration office, if you need to drop by in person.

    • If you own a dog, you also need to notify your previous commune of residence of the dog’s departure.

    • Notify the relevant section head (for military service), civilian service office (for civilian service) or civil defence office (for civil defence) of your previous commune of residence.

    • Notify the road traffic office (if you are moving to another canton, notify the road traffic office of your new canton of residence).

    • Contact the teachers and school authorities if you have children at school.

    • Remember to notify your electricity, gas and water supplier of your departure so they can take a final meter reading.

    • Notify your phone company of your move (registration and cancellation of your phone, broadband and digital TV connection).

    • Change your address for contractual partners: banks, employers, compensation office (pensioners and self-employed persons), doctors, dentists, insurance companies (health, household), newspapers delivered to your home, associations, etc. and organize forwarding at Swiss Post

    • Find out from the property agent, the police or the commune about parking permits and parking regulations if spaces have to be occupied during the move.

    • Complete a property handover report (outgoing) with the landlord (or owner) of the old apartment.

    • Return the keys in exchange for a receipt.

    • Complete a property handover form (incoming) with the landlord (or owner) of the new apartment.

    • Register with the residents’ registration office of the new commune within the relevant time limit, generally 14 days (the residents’ registration office will forward the information to the relevant tax authorities).

    • If you own a dog, you will also need to register it with the new commune’s residents’ registration office.

    • Notify the relevant section head (for military service), civilian service office (for civilian service) or civil defence office (for civil defence) in your new commune of your move.
