Driving theory test

Learner drivers take a driving theory test and a practical test. You need to pass the theory test to obtain your provisional licence.

Booking your test

When you apply for your provisional licence, see, you will receive a confirmation from your canton’s road traffic office. You need this to be able to book your theory test online. In some cantons you can choose a date for the exam from a list on the application form and send it back by post.

Your canton’s road traffic office will then send you the details of your test. You may take the test as many times as you like.

In the cantons of Bern, Glarus, Solothurn, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Neuchâtel, Schwyz, Vaud, Zug and Zurich you can also take the theory test in English. Please contact your local road traffic office for further information.

You will be sent your provisional licence after you pass your theory test.
