Employers must grant employees up to three days to care for a sick child on presentation of a medical certificate. This applies per case of illness.
The parents are, however, required to look for an appropriate alternative solution (e.g. asking friends or relatives to care for the child). This obligation does not apply when the parent’s presence is necessary, for example in the case of a seriously ill infant. Depending on the illness, employees can also take time off work for a longer period. Wages are owed for a limited period.
If there are no friends or relatives available to care for a child, the Swiss Red Cross offers a child care service, whereby children up to the age of 12 are cared for at home by a caregiver.
