Absences from work

In certain cases, employees are entitled to paid hours or days off.

Events that concern you personally

You are entitled to take the required time off work during a limited amount of time due to the following events. Basically, there is no obligation to make up for lost working time.


Reasons listed in the law

  • Accident
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Legal obligations (e.g. military service)
  • Public office

Additional reasons

  • Marriage
  • Birth of your own children
  • Death of a close relative
  • Moving home, etc.

Time off is granted for the above events, however, the amount of time is not specified by law. Check your employment regulations to find out what rules apply in your company.

Events that concern a large number of people

You basically bear the full risk for the following events, which means employers have no obligation to pay wages:

  • Traffic jams
  • Power outages
  • Blocked highways
  • Flight cancellations, etc.
