The right of initiative exists not only at federal level, but also at cantonal and communal level. The subject matter of these initiatives is often greater than at federal level since federal initiatives can only propose amendments to the Federal Constitution. Several cantons offer citizens the opportunity to launch a legislative initiative, which allows people to request a new law or the amendment of an existing one. A request to amend the law is only possible in certain cantons.
Visit your canton’s website to find out more about the cases in which you can launch a cantonal and/or communal initiative and what the requirements are.
