Generally, to vote or to stand for election, you must be a Swiss citizen, be 18 or older on election day,
and you may not be under general guardianship due to mental illness or mental incapacity.
The terms and conditions for standing as a candidate in cantonal elections are, however, defined by
the cantonal constitutions and legislation for citizens living in Switzerland and those living abroad.

Public debates on active and passive voting rights for foreign nationals have started some years ago and are ongoing. To this day, this possibility is not signed into law in any of the cantons.
