Losing your driving licence/provisional licence

Report theft

If your driving licence is stolen you must report the theft to the police.

Duplicate driving licence

Your canton’s road traffic office can issue you with a duplicate licence. You can present the following documents over the counter or send them by post:

Copy of an official identity document (ID card, passport, residence permit)

Old format blue driving licence If you lose your blue driving licence it will be replaced by a new credit-card format licence.

Colour photo (if your licence was issued over a year ago).
Copy (or Original, depends on the Canton) of an official identity document (ID card, passport, residence permit)

The lost or stolen credit-card format driving licence is automatically cancelled in the driver authorisation register (FABER) when your new permit is issued.

Fees vary from canton to canton.

Returning your previous licence

Your old licence becomes invalid when a new one is issued and may no longer be used. If you find a licence that you have reported lost, it may no longer be used. You should send it to the road traffic office with a note.
