    How is the Council of States elected?

    Rules on electing the members of the Council of States can vary among cantons.

    The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden elected its Council of States representative on 30 April during the Landsgemeinde cantonal assembly (information in German).

    Council of States elections are cantonal elections conducted independently by each of the 26 cantons. Cantons can define most of the rules for electing their representatives. For example, some cantons do not allow Swiss abroad to vote in their Council of States elections.
